Mikey always thought he was going to be an educator, until he volunteered on a farm...
We sit down for a quick chat to Mikey Densham, the Field Manager at Mossy Willow Farm in southern Victoria.
Mikey and his partner Keren (read her interview here) manage the Mossy Willow biointensive organic market garden on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Mossy Willow is a farm and retreat with purpose, aiming to connect the community to the Earth through regenerative farming, education and delicious produce.
On less than 1 acre, Mikey and Keren produce gob-smackingly gorgeous and nutritious produce for the Fitzroy Mills Farmers Market, a number of Melbourne restaurants (including the epic Atlas Dining) and their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) weekly boxes.
What is the Best thing about working in Agriculture?
For me, agriculture is what connects me to the patterns of the world around me. It's a culture, it's dynamic, it's challenging, it's forever changing. When you farm, you grow internally as much as the plants around you. This is the reason I continue to farm; to cultivate myself, those around me, and nature.
What is your personal agriculture career dream?
To grow food in a way which uplifts people and nourishes the land I care for.
What was the very first step you took on your agricultural career pathway?
I decided to volunteer with a friend on a farm. It was instant. I knew this was what I wanted to spend my life devoted to. It really just snowballed from there.
What are the top 3 agricultural learning experiences you have had?
What advice would you give to someone starting out in agriculture?
Get out there and immerse yourself in the experience of farming. Find the best of the best and work alongside them, watch them, question them, learn as much as you can from them. The fastest steps to excellence are through the mistakes you make, and from the guidance of those who have walked the path before you. Find a mentor(s) and work your hardest in exchange for knowledge and experience. Fall fast to succeed sooner.
